Exclusion number 4 states:

Some people will discount a state because it does not contain an actual city or town named Springfield.
--(A) It could quite possibly be that the clues point to a state without one in real life.
--(B) This may be just what the show's creators were counting on. Therefore, we cannot discount a state simply because it does not really have a Springfield.

The following maps are when this rule is suspended.

Red states are states are ones that have been eliminated.

Yellow states are ones that do not have a real Springfield.

(possibly 11 and 8 respectively if one includes SC + NE)
